What is LED Light Therapy?

It seems everywhere you look there are light facials, light treatments and home light devices on offer. You only need to scroll through your socials to be confronted with creepy looking masks that are reminiscent of Hannibal, but do they actually work? Let’s cut through the noise and learn some cold hard facts about LED and how it can improve your skin health.

What is LED?

LED stands for Light Emitting Diode, these radiate therapeutic light energy to trigger rejuvenation and healing within the skin. There is hard science backing up this technology, did you know that NASA first discovered the benefits of LED? A space program that was using LED to help grow plants in zero gravity environments found that astronauts wounds were healing faster as a result. This low level light treatment creates a natural response similar to that of plant photo-synthesis. A relaxing, pain free treatment will have your skin glowing without any downtime.

What is a wavelength and why does it matter?

Each wavelength works at a very specific depth in the skin (so specific they are measured in nanometers!) and is then absorbed by chromophores (these are targets in our skin that absorb the light). Clinical data shows us that to create change within the skin the wavelengths must be bang on 415mn (blue), 633mn (red) and 830nm (near-infrared). Plainly speaking if the wavelength is off it will not hit the target and there will be no change in the skin. In the case of some masks trending online, make sure you do your research! A lot of the cheaper options don't use clinically proven wavelengths or they work within a wide range (ie 620nm - 750nm), sometimes they won't even provide you with the nanometers. In this case, you might as well hold up a set of Christmas lights to your face and hope for a result. Check out the diagram below for a visual explanation on what lights work where!

What do these wavelengths do?

Blue light (415nm) fights blemishes and destroys the bacteria that causes acne and aids in preventing breakouts.

Red light (633nm) accelerates cell renewal and repair while boosting collagen and elastin systhesis for smoother, firmer skin.

Near Infared (830nm) helps modulate inflammation, accelerate wound healing, calm irritation, reduce redness and is also clinically effective in the treatment of hyper-pigmentation.

Why we choose Dermalux LED?

At Heart Space Beauty we use the Dermalux® because it is the ONLY system on the market that can deliver all 3 clinically proven wavelengths simultaneously. This unique capability means that we are able to target multiple skin concerns in each session and give you superior results.

How can I get the best results?

With the Dermalux Flex treatment results are cumulative, so if we are treating a specific skin condition the best approach is a treatment series. When treating acne, pigmentation, ageing or inflammation a series of 6 or 12 LED sessions spaced 2-3 times per week will give your skin the best outcome (check out the Power Glow Series).

If your skin health is already stable we can maximise this by adding LED onto your regular facials. This will take your results to the next level and give you a glow like no other!
